Interesting article, while I agree with you for the most part I can’t help but wonder how many fewer real wine drinkers we would have without these types of wines. I feel safe in assuming that you have a very advanced palate, or to put it another way, a very mature palate. Was this always the case? My guess would be no. When I look at my own growth as a wine drinker I can’t believe some of the wines I used to think were “good”. The wines that I once thought were good would probably be on the “loathe” list now. But without those wines I probably wouldn’t have advanced my palate to where it is today.I think this all has to do with maturity related to the topic of discussion. Wine, beer, movies, and music all fit. I see examples of this every now and then. I see a movie that I loved 20 years ago, and now when I watch it I can’t believe how bad it is.So while I completely agree with you and have no love for those that choose to make these mass appeal wines, I do see their value to the overall wine community. And even though a majority of the amateur wine drinkers may not take the next step to advance their palate, those that do are in for a lifetime of enjoyment, but owe it, in some ways, to those mass produced “popular” wines.
Jonathan, I hear what you’re saying, and while I agree for the most part, I have to respond to your last statement. I think you are being a little narrow with the wineries. Making a profit must always be an underlying force in winemaking. How else could they survive? Yes, in a perfect world, wine making would always be MORE important than making a buck, but even the most dedicated and purist winemakers still have to make a living.I don’t wines Yellow Tail et al, because they don’t deserve my money, they make wine (if you can call it that) to make money – Nothing else. Mass produced, chemically altered wine made in 200,000 cases a year wine is of no interest to me either.Perhaps we’d both agree that we both support winemaking where they make money AND make good wine? This is where I see most of Ontario & BC’s wines (thankfully).Making a profit and making good wine should not be mutually exclusive.Cheers!

You’re bang on Jeff. Of course my palate has evolved. However, I am not saying that I haven’t drank my share of bad wine. The article was moreso focusing on those companies, mostly large ones, who have abandoned the passion. Just because you are new to wine drinking or have an inexperienced palate, doesn’t mean you have to be subjected to only these “frankenwines”. Even beginners can find cheap, well made wines. I am not saying you have to be snobby, I would just rather have people know about “real” wine, you know?
Rick, I agree. That last line was meant for those like yellow tail, etc. I know that wineries need to make money. In fact I want them to make boatloads. They can make it from cheap wine if they like, as long as they are making the best wine they can at each particular price-point. I am not saying everyone has to make premium wine. Just the opposite. Cheap wine doesn’t have to mean poor wine or manufactured wine. Thanks for commenting!!
